The Best of Tucson: Pima Air & Space Museum

Lately, the winter weather has Arizonans bundled up, but there are plenty of adventures to enjoy that include a hybrid of indoor and outdoor activities in Tucson. When you take off to the Pima Air & Space Museum, you’re bound for a flight of unforgettable aviation history, education, and experience — you can bring the kids and even the family dog!

Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest non-government-funded aviation museums in the United States. Spanning 80 acres, the museum features 400+ historic aircraft, six indoor and air-conditioned hangars, outdoor collections, and priceless aviation artifacts that could take you all day or more to explore.

As you walk around, you’ll experience full immersion in aviation and read about the stories behind the aircraft on plaques. The indoor museum categorizes displays by type, where you’ll find aviation from early U.S. fighters to NASA aircraft. Special exhibits display a history of women and people of color in aviation and the challenges pilots and crew members faced during combat.

Not only are the exhibits rich in history, but they also allow you to get up close to some famous and obscure aircraft, like the Wright Brothers flyer or rare military aircraft from across the world. You can engage in high flight yourself through interactive media, including a trip to space in the full-size Apollo Command Module simulator.

When you’re ready to come back to Earth, happy visitors rave about the lunch available at the convenient on-site dining establishment, Flight Grill. Over the years, the cafe’s layout evolved from a smaller tin shack to the modern restaurant it is today.

So, while you enjoy a hot meal and a cold beverage, you will overlook the Navy and Air Force fighter jets from the comfort of a shaded patio. Your view also comes with an air show since the Davis Monthan Air Force Base is right across the street and planes consistently take off and land.

If a trek across the 80-acre outdoor sounds extensive, there’s a 45-minute Tram Tour that takes passengers to view more than 150 planes in the museum’s collection. The tour is narrated by an experienced guide, providing details of each plane’s significance. Many staff members are veterans, so your guide may share a personal story of service with an aircraft on display.
