While the sweltering temperatures in Arizona might tempt you to remain in air-conditioned environments, Tucson’s summer festivals and events will make you want to brave the heat.
Check out the Tucson 23: Mexican Food Festival or indulge your summer bird watching with August’s two Summer Birding Festivals. On weekends during the summer, don’t forget to attend one or all of the 2nd Saturdays Downtown.
Be sure to carry water with you, wear sunscreen, and keep a hat on hand to combat the intensity of the heat and sunshine.
2nd Saturdays Downtown
From April to December, Tucson hosts 2nd Saturdays Downtown. During the summer, the fun begins at 5 PM. Stroll down Congress Street and take in all the activities, food, and shopping available in this family-friendly event. You’ll likely see options for quick shows in the theater or fun museum activities as well.

Cool Summer Nights at Arizona Sonora Desert Museum
All summer long, explore the desert nightlife with fun exhibits, activities, and more. Every Saturday night, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum highlights different creatures of the night, astronomy, and insects. Participation in Cool Summer Nights is free with admission to the museum, and it’s from 5 pm to 10 pm.

Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival
From July 31st to August 3rd, grab your binoculars and head out for self-guided and guided birdwatching tours. Through these trips, exhibits, and presentations, learn about the Southern Arizona birds and butterflies in the area. This annual conference is hosted by the Cochise Community College in Sierra Vista, which is located near some of the best birding areas.
The Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival is routinely voted as one of the top 5 birding and nature festivals in the country. The summer festival offers free programs, wildlife exhibits, vendors, and more. The goal is to offer an educational celebration of the amazing birds, mammals, insects, and reptiles in southern Arizona.
Guided tours are limited to a maximum of ten people plus the professional guide. The Southwest Wings mission is to encourage environmental awareness and support nature-based tourism.
